Should CrossFit Have Anonymous Submission Drug Testing? Death By: Episode 45

On this episode of Death By, Lauren Kalil and the contestants discuss the pros and cons of potentially having the CrossFit Open qualify athletes for the Games, thoughts surrounding CrossFit's new sponsor Hustle Up, and whether athletes should be allowed to fill out anonymous submissions of athletes they think are on PEDs. Our contestants include Chase Ingraham, Justin Cotler and Jason Croxon.

[Music] hey everybody and welcome to another episode of death bu where contestants

0:06

will earn Reps for their arguments for a chance to stand on top of the podium pedestal I am your host Lauren khil

0:12

whoever I decide has the best argument through the final round will earn 30 seconds to talk about a topic of their

0:18

choosing on today's episode we have affiliate owner and Crossfit analyst

0:23

Chase Ingram with get with the programming founder and head coach of

0:29

under dogs Athletics Justin Cotler and The Man Behind Jason CF media

0:36

Jason crocon Shawn and Tommy are going to love your background I think Chase even loves your background maybe it'll

0:43

earn you extra points but I don't understand any of those characters behind you so well clearly that's Dragon

0:49

Ball Z and has nothing to do with comic books oh see yeah are are there any

0:56

comic book references or superheroes or I can't I don't know who's behind you I mean I've got comic books if

1:04

you that red Hulk uh that was um Planet Hulk Planet Hulk that savagery that's

1:12

just what happened to be I was just gonna wave and say hello during the introduction because I

1:17

realized I listen to this mostly Audio Only and I listen to you introduce everyone each episode and I'm just you

1:25

know I I don't nobody describes the funny joke Chase is doing with the phone when that's a when you cut have like a

1:33

catchphrase have to watch it's different I like that maybe we'll add that in I

1:39

also forget you have a last name Jason I know every time she says that I'm like who oh that guy it's not CF media that's

1:47

weird I might get it changed legally changed because that's

1:53

the only way people recognize you love it yeah all right guys let's get into this

1:58

week's episode let's play Death by round

2:03

number one in Dave Castro's latest week in review a viewer presented a question

2:09

saying that the open doesn't matter and gave ideas on how it could potentially matter Castro's response he said quote

2:17

we will make it matter again and quote we have plans to fix that what are the

2:23

pros and cons to potentially having athletes punch their ticket to the games

2:29

from the open again how it used to be we will start with you Jason in round number

2:34

one well personally I don't think the line the open doesn't matter is true but I know you've spoken about that before

2:40

so we'll just focus on the very small percentage of people that do the open with a genuine shot of making it to the games would an automatic spot to the

2:47

games uh make it more important of course but at what cost well I think uh

2:54

in the eyes of many while it might add value to the open it would probably devalue the games the spots at the games

3:01

are incredibly precious and qualifying someone just through a few online workouts it doesn't really seem to Merit

3:08

a ticket to the games that being said I've spoken to a lot of athletes in the leadup to the

3:14

open and now quarterfinals and the majority are more concerned about quarterfinals because of how few are

3:19

making it then to the semi-finals so I do think saying that the you know top

3:24

finisher in the open for each region could get a ticket to the semifinals would actually be a good alternative

3:30

because they would still have to compete in person against the best in their region to actually get a tiet to the

3:36

games but it would be uh you know they wouldn't have the stress of having to worry about quarterfinals even things

3:42

like being able to book flights accommodation in advance would make life easier for them being able to negotiate

3:47

with sponsors and things like that so it'd be a tremendous reward for them to be able to skip that portion of the competition but it would still mean that

3:53

the right people are getting to the games going through semi-finals so you don't want to see the open bring them

3:59

straight to the games you rather it be straight to uh semi-finals yes okay

4:05

three points for Jason Justin what are your thoughts here

4:11

listen here we go let get ready people have to understand that that things

4:17

evolve like sports evolve okay we're in a very different place than we were when

4:23

the open started in in 2011 um you know I I think what we

4:28

should be focusing on on especially on the sport side is is figuring out how to make this more like a professional sport

4:35

we talk about uh having a season or something that's similar to the the you

4:40

know PGA Tour or the or the tennis you know tour or Formula 1 Etc where we're

4:46

we're trying to have more inseason competitions that where you can gain points and that if you know that that

4:54

will qualify you for the games and and those are all you know ideally in-person events um um I'm I'm not a big fan of of

5:02

the of the open um having much to do with the games at all uh you know

5:08

especially at this point in in in the sport uh it's it's an awesome thing that

5:14

the entire Community gets to do you know three workouts where you know uh Tia

5:21

Clare Tumi and and Laurel horbath and Justin maderis and Ricky Gard are getting to do those workouts you get to

5:28

have fun with your friends and compare to this person or that person but what we're talking about ultimately a

5:34

professional sport for these athletes how they make a living um what they do with their sponsors Etc you know um I

5:42

would hate to see more weight given to the open especially you know if you're talking about that time of a year

5:49

someone may have an injury someone may have be get sick for a week and you know it may turn out to mean much more than

5:54

it should and I so I'm not a fan of it at all um you know I I don't think it

6:00

should be I don't think we should uh elevate it much from what we've seen I just think that's part of what we're

6:06

dealing with with the evolution of sport I think that's fine there's there's nothing wrong with that whatsoever uh

6:12

and and my goal would be hopefully that we gear it more and more and more and more the sport side that we create more

6:20

of a professionalism in the sport and that's that that doesn't take away from the community or the methodology at all

6:27

and the open is a cool part of that but I don't think it needs to be more than what it is so could there be any pros

6:35

that you see from this not particularly okay I'll give you

6:42

1.5 points for answering half of the question well I answer the question I said there were no Pro pros and

6:50

cons got to come with both no I don't not when I don't think there's any pros

6:56

I don't have that's true answer he he deserves more than 1.5 I mean that's a

7:02

joke but that's fine that's at least a three-point answer I mean I don't I'm cool with it' be a three-point answer

7:09

Lauren's on me this season I don't know I did something with Lauren in the off season we come back adjus in a question

7:16

are there any pros and he answers the question yeah no points zero points for

7:22

me because I didn't answer the question Chase I agree here that's at least two

7:28

half a point thank you when is everybody else the point givers hey I'm as a

7:35

competitor in looking out for Justin here man mostly I don't want to hear about the bitching at the end when I win

7:41

but nice just go ahead Chase all right uh I really like what Jason had said

7:49

about open to semifinals I really like that a lot it's a very simple way to

7:55

make the open matter more uh without putting any new changes or wild things

8:00

into the open other than good programming that is going to filter these athletes in only three events and that's the big thing here I hated when

8:07

they sent athletes to the cross it games from the directly from the open what is it 19 and 20 and they had five events to

8:13

do that there's no way you can do that appropriately in just three events during the open to send people to the

8:19

Crosset games it is a way too big of an advantage to give those go give to those athletes with programming that doesn't

8:26

necessarily reflect CrossFit Games qualification abilities and skills and strengths I do like the qualification to

8:32

semi-finals as one option but at the same time is that Justin is talking about engagement exciting more

8:39

professionalism I think the way to make the open matter more and quarterfinals more is uh something that I've been

8:45

working on uh with Bill grundler and Mike Halpin on get with the programming is making the open a part of the

8:52

strength of field system that goes into semi-finals week in and week out as well as the two submission dates in

8:57

quarterfinals and every week you have a new top 100 based off the 100 worldwide in the leaderboard same with week two

9:03

same with week three there's a show to do every week and it comes to that and it'll constantly change who the top 100

9:09

is and what game spots are being allocated to which semi-final you're creating shows every week in the NBA

9:15

there's a new show about who's in the top six going to the playoffs and who's in the bottom four going to the playing

9:21

uh new playoff system all of that stuff creates content excitement entertainment engagement and buy in from the top

9:28

athletes because now now the open matters more for strength of field now the quarterfinals matter more for the

9:33

top 100 and who what semi-finals is getting what games qualifying spots and so you create this worldwide

9:39

participatory event with everything on the line for games athletes as well it's another way to keep the open mattering

9:44

more without changing a whole system in place that you have already I like that two points for Chase because you stole

9:51

from Jason for the first part well I'm concerned about this version of Chase Ingram we've got on the show because

9:57

he's trying to give points to Justin he's saying things about me I just it is a little weird yeah you

10:06

okay you made a great point that I already had written down so I gave you props for making a great point because

10:11

that I agree with you oh thank you I'm not gonna come in here and just like stupid idea

10:17

Jason you've been known to do that before so well it's because it was a stupid idea the last time you talked

10:23

there we go that was a good one now he's back now we can continue play the

10:30

game topic number two CrossFit they recently announced that hustle up a new

10:37

fitness app built for CrossFit affiliate owners and athletes will be the official sponsor of the Masters teen and adaptive

10:45

CrossFit Games as well as the official sponsor of the 2024 CrossFit semifinals

10:51

now my question is what are your overall thoughts but also is this a conflict of interest given that hustle up offers

10:58

affiliate programming we will start this round with Justin

11:03

Cotler I'll be honest I I know nothing about hustle up I didn't even know that

11:09

they existed prior to you asking this question and hearing about you got the

11:16

questions beforehand Justin yeah I I I no I'm saying you know when I looked at the question that you asked I I had to

11:22

look up hustle up because I I don't know anything about them um but that being

11:27

said I I think we've learned you know over the over the last year um that uh

11:35

if you are willing to um to to pay a little bit of

11:40

money I think that you can be a sponsor I think we saw that last year with uh

11:45

was it proven Mayhem and hwpo that you know were official sponsors at the games

11:51

and you know they all I don't know I felt like that was kind of weird with all the other camps and you know

11:57

ultimately I I heard then there was you know it was you PID to be a sponsor so I

12:02

I think ultimately we're we're in a situation where um CrossFit I don't I

12:08

don't want to say that they're struggling to get sponsors but I think that they are pretty much it's you know it's it's open season so if you're

12:14

willing to Fork up some cash and and and want to be a sponsor that that seems to be seems to be on the table for you so

12:22

whether or not that's a conflict of interest I I don't I don't think it matters I think we're you're talking

12:28

about the system itself look at all the different camps that have affiliate programs look at a CrossFit that has an

12:34

affiliate program look at this person that has an AFF I I think at this stage of the game it's so unregulated I I

12:41

don't I don't see it mattering it doesn't seem to be a big deal to me um I I I think if it would have been a big

12:47

deal would have been a big deal last year when Mayhem proven and hardw work pays off for official sponsors of the games so I see it as this is a nothing

12:56

Burger 0. Five Points for Justin let's go next person are are you only saying

13:03

this because O'Keefe is not on the call today no I would say that prior to you I

13:08

I listen last year I'm not saying that that was a bad thing that they were sponsors I'm saying that they were in a

13:15

position to be able to become an official sponsor because they had you know they had the money to be able to

13:22

offer to CrossFit to say hey we want to be official sponsors a lot of other people aren't in that position but you

13:28

know what good for them them like if you've got the position if you've got the money and you've got the resources

13:33

to be able to be an official sponsor and get more visibility well there's nothing wrong with that I don't begrudge anyone

13:39

doing that so I'm I'm totally cool with it okay I have some follow-up questions

13:45

but we'll let the other contestants answer first uh two points for Justin Chase what are your thoughts here uh I

13:51

mean hustle as Justin said is when this got announced I think it was like a week or or so ago I had no idea what this was

13:59

and the question was like is this even an app that was a little up for debate on social media and if you look at their Instagram they have like 1,600 followers

14:05

on Instagram it's a very brand new app but a a a sponsor nonetheless of a

14:12

season mainly teen adaptive and age group that

14:17

need sponsors they need support because they are facilitating this CrossFit

14:23

Games finale competition for CrossFit and they need more help and support as

14:28

they go along yes they're going to be a part of semi-finals as well but to Justin's Point as you're talking about I don't see any conflict of interest if

14:34

they're offering affiliate programming because of what we had at the Crosset games last year Mayhem sponsoring the RV

14:40

park hwpo doing some type of things in the um in the vendor Village area all of

14:45

them have different kind of programming individualized programming Masters adaptive strong man and affiliate

14:51

programming that's coming out with a lot of these athletes as well or or Camp so no there's no conflict of interest there

14:56

I'm of the position is that if they are willing to step up and put in some money to support the sport and the athletes

15:03

for their is then as long as they're not a direct competitor of cross it itself

15:08

then I think it's a good play to have out there I mean Greg glasman said he's like I would accept money from anybody

15:13

but if I don't believe in what you do I'm not going to promote you I mean look at the Olympics you have Olympics sponsored by McDonald's and Coca-Cola

15:19

for crying out loud but they give the most money out there look at the NFL and the beer sponsors and all of this thing

15:25

is like CrossFit needs to make sure is that or or I would to not CrossFit fans

15:30

need to understand that there's a difference between what we do inside the gym with Crossfit and who we are as a

15:36

sport and this sport needs people sponsoring and putting money in that isn't necessarily something that they

15:42

align with in the methodology and they're completely separate so I'm totally okay with it okay good points

15:47

three points for you Jason what's your take so it's an interesting one isn't it

15:52

because as both Chase and Justin have mentioned like they've never heard of it before so people are suspicious about

15:58

you know where's this come from and how can they then be in a position to sponsor the games where's the money

16:03

coming from um I've done a little bit of digging uh first I would address the conflict of interest thing though I

16:08

think the points have been made it's I would see it as a bigger conflict of interest a training camp that has

16:13

athletes at the games being a sponsor then an app that does affiliate programming because the nature of owning

16:20

an affiliate means that you're free to pick programming from anywhere you make it yourself or you go somewhere else and

16:25

get it that's sort of the nature of being an affiliate as opposed to being a friend franchise um the the concern I

16:32

have or or the thing that I'm intrigued about a little bit is the way they're planning to integrate using it um

16:37

because I I was reading an article and they were talking about the fact that you could use it to semi-finals could

16:43

use it to communicate with volunteers or for spectators to uh book you know things that will be happening at

16:50

semi-finals uh and that's a little bit strange because I if if they want to take a sponsor say look you know we'll

16:56

stick your name everywhere and if people want to use that's absolutely fine they're free to do that but if you're

17:01

starting to sort of force uh you know volunteers to have the app because that's how we're going to be communicating at semi-finals or

17:08

Spectators to have the app because that's how you're going to book into different things that will be happening during semi-finals well now you're

17:13

forcing people to go and download a free app but we know with these kind of apps they always say if it's free then you're

17:19

not a customer you're the product so I don't really like that you're sort of directing people to download and install something that we don't really know much

17:27

about interesting I didn't think of it that way uh three points for Jason to follow up on specifically Chase and

17:35

Justin were talking about this saying that you know they don't think there's a conflict of interest because we've

17:40

already seen what happens with training camps as sponsors but like is there

17:45

certain benchmarks that a sponsor should make in order for CrossFit to take their

17:51

money to see that they're in line with them or is that or are we at the point where it just doesn't really matter as

17:57

long as it's not a bad sponsor to the brand then we're going to take your

18:04

money benchmarks in in what context I mean in anything like how much

18:11

in line is it with the methodology or what we're doing or sport or viewership

18:17

like we talk about how this seems like a newer app and doesn't maybe have the backing that some other apps in our

18:22

ecosystem have like are there sure like if you look for a new games location there's certain benchmarks they need to

18:29

reach in order for it to even get on the plate well don't know how much money

18:35

they they they gave though you know what I mean so it's at the end of the day I don't know how established you have to

18:41

be if you if you you know meet the requirements of the donation or the or

18:47

you know or not donation But ultimately you meet the requirements of of you know what it costs to be a sponsor I I I

18:55

don't have an issue with it you know I I and again I Chase brings up a good point

19:00

we look at you know various sponsors in different sports and a lot of them don't line up with you know health and LIF

19:07

health and and and fitness or lifestyle Brands I mean you know a lot of those a lot of the stuff that we see they're not

19:14

necessarily great for you but but they got a lot of money um now I don't know anything like I said I I I don't know

19:20

enough about this app uh or this company you know to to be able to say one way or the other you know other than to say

19:27

that if if they paid the required sum that they needed to to be able to come

19:33

to the table and and be a part of it maybe CrossFit has plans with them in the future I have absolutely no idea um

19:39

but but I don't I don't see it as an issue um especially because they are

19:45

they do kind of fit into the ecosystem I mean they you know um I mean it's for

19:51

all intents and purposes it it looks like they're a fitness app right so I mean it it does make a lot of sense um I

19:58

you know and there are several out there so my thing is like competition is fine you know if you've got this app that's

20:05

willing to pay and this app's not willing to pay well the app that's willing to pay is the one that's going to get the the sponsorship right I mean

20:11

that's the way it works so Lauren are you asking then like so Chase talked about Coca-Cola McDonald's things like

20:17

that so is your your question more in line with so if there's something that goes so contrary to the methodology of

20:24

CrossFit in general like should there be a benchmark that CrossFit says like I I get it that you know people that watch

20:30

the Olympics they see McDonald's but they're not necessarily going out and themselves practicing the things they're watching on TV compared to CrossFit

20:37

where the majority of people that watch the sport of CrossFit are then going to their affiliate or training and sort of

20:42

being told one thing in the box with regards to their nutrition and how they approach life and then are looking at

20:47

the games and it's being sponsored by something that is kind of contrary to what they're being told when they're training is that the sort of benchmarks

20:54

that you were thinking about yeah because even when we think about when man was a sponsor of the CrossFit Games

21:01

and everybody was arguably upset about that but then you look at well is this

21:07

helping us continue to do the thing and move the sport forward I think it's it's

21:13

this balancing act so do we have like hard and fast lines or are there certain benchmarks that we would want to see

21:21

represent the games or stages in the games yeah I I think there needs to be

21:28

uh just because as you said when when monster was a sponsor people weren't happy so I

21:34

think they do need to walk a line to a degree where they can say like okay this company's bringing in a lot of money and

21:41

it's not you know directly in conflict with what we're doing so we could use them whereas maybe this other company

21:47

yes it's even more money but if then it upsets you know a lot of people is that

21:52

necessarily a good thing for us but then at the same time I think with enough digging into pretty much any company

21:59

that can afford to sponsor the games you're going to find something you don't like so um maybe you know it's

22:04

inevitable anyway okay moving on now to topic number

22:13

three this is a little off from Crossfit but I swear it's relevant on a recent tactical games podcast they discussed

22:20

how they're going to implement peed testings at their national competition

22:25

as a coste effective way they are going to have athletes anonymously write the names of athletes who they think should

22:32

be tested the top three men and the top three women whose names are written down will then be tested so my question is

22:40

should CrossFit implement this in addition to their current system as a way to have people outside of the podium

22:48

tested why or why not Chase we will start this round with you all right I I

22:54

went and listened to this podcast and that that portion that they were talking about in the I'll say this the first thing that jumped off the bat they said

23:00

CrossFit does testing and they just keep all the results in house which is a total lie CrossFit releases all the

23:06

information of their tests constantly and they're constantly looking to catch people could their testing be better

23:12

more robust yes but maybe we need some more sponsors to pay for those additional testings in season and out of

23:18

season especially for athletes that are on bands at the moment right you ban get ban for four years you could juice up

23:24

all you want because rarely do they go back and test during that four-year band and then you come back on the playing field what I did like is this is

23:31

actually something that I heard from I don't even know his real last name so he's kind of like Jason but Brian spin

23:36

of the barbell spin um he actually said this about a month ago on around the

23:42

Whiteboard where he said if you get if you fail a drug test his offer was you

23:49

should have the opportunity to basically dime out another athlete and if you are

23:56

correct and that athlete also fails add drug test you will get your sentence reduced by one year if you dime someone

24:04

out and they are clean you have to pay for the drug test that cross had administered for that athlete and I

24:11

thought that was a fantastic one now what I don't want is like well if I dime out five I'm back in the game that is

24:17

not on the table maybe reduce that to two because like if you have someone come out there like Jose cono and he

24:23

just outs half of the major league baseball players associate a of taking

24:29

steroids maybe reduce it at at most to two right but if you know some people and you can do that some type of

24:34

incentive there it's just like when you see Affiliates telling I would say us on the CrossFit affiliate team that there

24:40

are gyms out there illegally using CrossFit for profit that are not actual Affiliates we can't police the world

24:47

when it comes to that but Affiliates will tell us about that and then we can act on it I think a similar system in

24:52

place here but with that little uh incentive system or payment that you have to do would be really cool to

24:57

implement for CrossFit oo I do like that I was going to give you five points but since it was technically a spinny answer

25:05

is it is his last name spin spin no I don't know what his real last name is either I'm gonna go down a rabbit hole

25:11

later today and I'm gonna find I want to plagiarize I wanted to give credit where credit was du absolutely I'm gonna give

25:16

you four points that one point we'll send over to to Brian spin whatever your

25:22

last name is that I'll do my research and I'll find out so four points for Chase Jason what are your

25:29

thoughts well when you first sent through a question about tactical games I was a little bit upset because when you were on play chat I told you I know

25:36

nothing about the Tactical game and you sent this question and also I didn't like Brian spin's answer because I was

25:42

on that episode of around the Whiteboard and he won so so that hurts a little bit

25:47

um I don't really think this is the solution um I'm thinking maybe because

25:52

of things like training camps where uh you know I know someone like Justin CER he would never this but theoretically

26:00

someone could tell all their athletes we want you to put this name on the paper and so there would be ways you could

26:06

manipulate the system does the testing need to be improved absolutely I think at the moment there are of two camps of

26:12

people when they look at testing within CrossFit there are those that believe everyone is clean and people are just

26:17

jealous if they can't you know perform as well and then you have people that believe kind of maybe everybody is doing

26:22

it and they're just not getting caught and I don't think this solves that problem I do think we need more testing

26:28

throughout the year and maybe more furer testing and definitely testing when people aren't expecting it because just

26:34

choosing to test a few more people at the times that they already know people are being tested is not going to solve

26:40

any of the problems that people are saying are the problems with testing so uh definitely a better solution but it's

26:46

not this one three points for Jason Cutler what are your thoughts and do you have any

26:52

idea of what your thoughts would be to what Jason was saying with the training camps do you think people would actually

26:57

do that that yeah I would assume people would do that for sure um I I I'm not a

27:03

big fan of this that you know from the Tactical games um I I am a big fan of of

27:09

creating a much more robust testing system um but like Chase said man it's

27:15

expensive I mean it's very expensive uh you know we've heard for years uh CrossFit uh has been

27:22

criticized um because they're not associated with H usada or wada it's

27:28

it's not public Etc um and I think the best way to handle that is is to is to

27:34

lay out um what the drug protocol and what their system is I mean I think it's

27:40

honestly it's not communicated very well uh and I think they could do a better job of that um I think if people

27:46

understood you know more of uh who's being tested at what events how many

27:52

spots you know those types of things but I do agree that there needs to be um

27:58

significant more randomized testing uh I I you know I I definitely agree with Chase about you know people who get

28:05

popped and then they have four years and I mean you know do they get tested during that time again you know there's

28:10

a there's a there's not a lot of transparency there uh there's not a lot of communication with the public as to

28:15

what it really is going on and I think that's why there's you know there's there's so much criticism behind the

28:21

scenes from people um so I would just love to see the system um leveled up you

28:26

know a lot um uh and and I think that that can happen if they really dove into

28:32

it and took the time to try to um you know create something that was that was

28:37

more robust and uh you know I but again you know a lot of it's money guys uh

28:42

people have to realize that at the end of the day you need you need financial backing uh to be able to to test as much

28:50

as people want but um now I don't as far as going back to the question not a big fan of the Tactical games uh that plan

28:59

knowing that this is a huge financial lift for a company or an organization is

29:06

there somewhere that you guys would like to see the money coming from whether it is you know people this might sound lame

29:13

but donating throughout the calendar year or having some kind of like fund

29:19

where where people can invest in to help keep the sport clean or cleaner you can

29:27

you guys order like chip holle online sure was like you like to round up here

29:35

a there we go round up button round up button in the open donate five oh there

29:41

we go so one of the things that you know I mean we talk about it and obviously it's expensive but I don't think I think

29:49

it's less expensive to test more than to

29:55

um and and to have that be assist system that obviously is a deterrent to people

30:01

because at the end of the day nothing is going to hurt the SP Sport more than having your your big- time athletes pop

30:09

right so so if there is if if we've got a more robust system that actually puts

30:14

the fear of God in people um that is the that's the best way you know to

30:19

legitimize the sport as a professional sport but also I I think in the long run it saves you money because if you get

30:25

one of your cash cows that pops I mean a massive massive blight on the sport so

30:31

you know I know that's maybe like kind of long-term thinking and and and maybe

30:37

it's not the most optimistic but you know whenever you've got a sport where

30:42

people can make money and and Garner sponsorships the bottom line is people

30:47

are going to try to cut Corners um and we've seen that happen in the past and and I would just love to see you know a

30:55

a a system where I I think you know that that tests

31:01

enough athletes um per year that people will have to think twice because right

31:07

now it's you know you kind of know when you're going to get tested right I mean you know when you're going to get tested it's very rare there's not a ton of of

31:14

randomized testing um there is some but at the end of the day I don't know that it's enough to put the fear of God of

31:21

people to really stop it I thought maybe it could be like a get out of jail free card for the

31:27

sponsors that they want to use but they think people will be upset about so maybe they do get McDonald's and everyone's oh how could you get

31:33

McDonald's you know it goes against everything we believe within CrossFit you say guys don't worry we're going to use the money for drug tests happy drug

31:40

test system and then randomly Ronald McDonald turns up at different Affiliates and test these athletes that

31:45

would be great oh wow another you know

31:51

just I like it I that could make that could make some really good

31:58

[Laughter] marketing you know what uh Justin

32:03

Cotler after 32 minutes of reflection I'm gonna give you six points because I do feel like I've ripped you off a

32:09

couple weeks in a row so you're I just won you just won today by half a point

32:17

half a point at the beginning Point comes in the one we're complaining about comes

32:23

in circle baby wow look at that Lauren threw me a bone guys I don't know how I

32:29

feel about that I feel I feel a little dirty right

32:34

now the interest on the three points that you didn't get are now six so

32:39

that's impressive isn't it that's inflation for you Justin Cotler is our champion he has

32:46

won 30 seconds to talk about a topic of your choosing you may begin I wasn't extremely prepared for

32:54

this because I've been getting smashed the last few weeks so I didn't want to to uh I didn't I didn't want to uh come

32:59

in you know and jinx myself by having anything prepared but one thing I will discuss and I and this is just a little

33:07

bit of a pet peeve of mine that I noticed on the leaderboard for the uh for the teams this last couple of days

33:14

um how come they don't have the team rosters on the leaderboard have you guys noticed that yeah yeah what the heck is

33:21

going on like I went on there and I'm looking through the teams and I'm trying to figure out who's on these teams and I

33:28

have absolutely no idea for the majority of them I see the names I see the scores I don't see who the heck is on the teams

33:36

and except for obviously you know the the three or four teams that that have gotten the most notoriety and the most

33:42

visibility um we right now everyone else is anonymous so I was that's just a pet

33:48

peeve of mine that I've noticed the last couple days and hopefully CrossFit will will uh be able to go on the the

33:53

leaderboard and change that I don't think it's it's too big of an Ask um you know let's give these athletes a little

33:59

bit of credit let's let's let people look them up and um you know hopefully it it brings them a little bit of

34:05

visibility cuz they've earned it obviously if they're in the top 10 top 20 in the world but for the majority of

34:11

them right now they're living in anonymity so anyway I noticed that the last couple days and it bothered

34:18

me I would agree with that it would be very nice to know who is on each team

34:24

don't know who's on the teams cool something to talk about yeah for amazing

34:30

yeah well even though you didn't come prepared Justin that was a a great topic

34:35

of conversation for us to to think about as we keep refreshing and hopefully

34:41

eventually The rosters of the teams will show up appreciate it well Justin congratulations Chase

34:48

Jason thank you guys for joining on another episode of death by quarterfinals for individuals next week

34:56

can't believe it's already here here is doing it

35:02

yeah Chase that's awesome amazing well good luck Justin good luck

35:08

to your athletes Jason good luck to all the media and things that you're doing to cover athletes over the pond and we

35:17

will see you guys next time
